Supporting Structures

Glenalmond Timber has vast knowledge and expertise with regard to most types of timber structures.
Our experience allows us to help and advise our clients from the outset, ensuring that they are fully informed of all options and thus ensuring customer satisfaction.

Glenalmond Timber is an industry leader in cladding innovation, offering structurally finger jointed, cut to length options up to 12m long. This allows us to remove unsightly butt cuts and increase the yield from the tree, as well as removing all waste from the site. We can offer innovative cladding textures such as driftwood or panel beaten aesthetics and provide a full paint or stain finish on all sides with two or three coats. We have also recently installed a CNC planning line, the first in the UK.

These new options allow us to innovate by looking at new species. For example, FSC English Sweet Chestnut, a species seldom used due to the poor availability of longer cladding lengths, but one that is just as durable as Oak. We finger jointed all the Sweet Chestnut for the award winning Stonehenge Visitor Centre. We also finger joint the majority of our Scottish Larch as this species is known for rotary growth, leaving it more susceptible to twist and bow than some other species.

Skeletal Support

Post and beam construction is a particular favourite of ours as it can be used as the main structural skeletal support system or for design features such as roof supports or corbel beams. Post and beam will often require metal plates, traditional joints, wooden dowels or even stainless steel fasteners to join the different elements together which we can design and provide in house. It all depends on the desired aesthetic.

Glenalmond can manufacture post and beams out of the following:

  • Glulam
  • Solid Oak (European)

  • Scottish Larch
  • Douglas Fir

The minimum section sizes of timber required will be dependent on species, length of clear span, spacing between each element and loading criteria.

TESTIMONIALS

Thank you – The help you gave us was truly amazing – you said yes to what seemed an impossible request in a heartbeat and what a difference it made – The house looked beautiful and we’re all so proud of what everyone achieved – the family were utterly overwhelmed by the sheer force of goodwill that everyone showed them

Gordon Whistance, In House Designer | BBC DIY SOS

It was an easy choice to move to using Glenalmond Timber’s floor joist system. It gives an improved specification for many aspects of the build, including acoustics, ease of installation, lack of bounce in the floor as well of course as cost effectiveness. A great all-round product, it’s a lot more than just a joist and the level of service from Fraser has been a joy. Whenever you deal with people such as that, the business process becomes a pleasure

Steven Streets, Technical Manager | Muir Group

The larch cladding we got from you is outstanding. We absolutely love the smooth riven effect. Thanks again for supplying the cladding

Adam Turner, Happy Customer

Thanks for the impromptu tour on Friday. I was very impressed with your set-up there, great to see yours and Martin’s enthusiasm for the business and getting quality products out into the market so we can build with quality materials

Angus MacDonald, Morgan Sindall

I just wanted to say a big thank you to you and your team for my order. We received it this morning and I am very impressed with the quality of the cladding and also how well it was all packaged. I would certainly recommend you to anyone who may be looking for cladding in the future.
