A distinctive timber-clad dwelling where textured Imbue brings warmth and character to a contemporary rural setting

Located near the River Tay, this contemporary rural dwelling combines a simple, utilitarian form with a carefully considered palette of natural materials. Drawing inspiration from traditional agricultural steadings, the home uses timber and metal cladding to create a modern interpretation of the surrounding rural vernacular.

Imbue timber cladding was selected for its durability, stability and distinctive natural appearance. The timber was finished with a riven texture, creating a subtle, irregular relief across the surface of the boards. This deliberately varied finish introduces a sense of movement and depth to the façade, with the naturally randomised pattern catching the light differently across each board and giving the elevation a more tactile, organic character.

Alongside the cladding, Glenalmond Timber also supplied oak posts, adding a robust natural element to the structure and external spaces. The warmth and natural character of the oak complements the textured Imbue cladding, creating a cohesive material palette that reflects the rural setting while maintaining the clean, contemporary aesthetic of the building.

Designed in response to its exposed position beside the River Tay, the dwelling incorporates a southwest-facing block which provides shelter from the prevailing winds. This creates a series of protected outdoor spaces, including a private courtyard and covered terrace, while maintaining views across the river, Dundee, the Tay bridges and surrounding farmland. Large areas of glazing and full-height sliding windows further strengthen the relationship between the interior and the landscape, bringing natural light deep into the living spaces and allowing the views to become an integral part of the home.

The combination of textured timber and oak gives the exterior a strong sense of warmth and materiality, while allowing the building to sit naturally within its agricultural surroundings. The changing texture of the Imbue cladding responds to the light throughout the day, adding subtle variation and depth to the façade.
