A Contemporary Coastal Retreat
Set within a dramatic coastal setting at Canty Bay near North Berwick, The Lookout is a contemporary timber-clad beach house designed to make the most of its uninterrupted views across the Firth of Forth towards the Bass Rock. Built in 2024, the architecture combines a simple, restrained form with a carefully considered material palette, allowing the building to sit naturally within its exposed coastal surroundings.
The exterior is clad in Imbue, selected for its rich natural character and suitability to the contemporary design. The timber is finished in Midnight Black on one elevation, creating a bold, architectural contrast, while NatureSeal CU weathering accelerant has been applied to the other elevation to encourage a more uniform transition towards a naturally weathered appearance. This approach allows the timber to evolve with its coastal environment while maintaining a consistent and considered aesthetic across the elevations.
