Finger jointed timber is stronger than conventional dimension timber of the same grade. Each piece is straight as defects such as bow, twist and cup are significantly reduced or even eliminated. Finger jointing permits the homebuilder to specify continuous long length floor joists that can “double span” i.e. carry the load over supporting walls for the width or length of the project without a break. This improves the stiffness and thus performance of the floor which would not be possible with conventional sawn lumber.
